With the end of the War of 1812, the United States returned to the problem of Barbary piracy. So in the March of 1815 the U.S. Congress authorized deployment of naval power against Algiers, President Madison wanted war. He thought that the declaration of war was necessary for protecting American merchant ships in the region and for asserting the United States’ dominance as a power in the world. Commodore Decatur was ordered to sail to Algiers and attack any Algerine ships he came across, thereby achieving more favorable terms with the new dey, Omar Agha. After numerous naval battles capturing ships the Algerians returned all American captives which was estimated to be around 10 Americans. Algeria also paid $10,000 for seized shipping. The treaty guaranteed no further tributes by the United States. In addition to that the treaty granted the United States full shipping rights in the Mediterranean Sea. This addition was advantage for the growing country and its wishes to trade globally, peacefully.
